Right and Left (Bilateral) Posterior (behind) thigh and calf Reticular feeder and Spider veins
A 50-year-old beautiful active academic visited our clinic with Right and Left (Bilateral) Posterior (Behind) thigh and calf Reticular feeder and spider veins. Her abnormal veins started to appear when she was around 30 years of age and gradually got worse with each pregnancy. She was suffering from discomfort at the end of the day. Her symptoms went worse by standing for long hours and improved by elevation of legs which are the expected symptoms of varicose veins. She was worried about symptoms and possible health effects of these abnormal veins and her self-confidence was affected.
On thorough examination, we noticed spider and reticular feeder veins on both legs. Duplex Ultrasound (DU) examination was done during her initial visit with us to find out the source of these visible veins. The feeder into her reticular feeder and spider veins on both legs were Small Saphenous Veins( SSV) which are located deeper into calf muscles. Our approach was to treat the source of surface varices (both SSVs) by performing Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) technique under local anesthesia which has a very promising success rate in treating big truncal veins (up to 95% effective if done properly by experienced hands), it was performed as an outpatient, walk-in walk-out. The patient was required to wear compression stockings for a week (only during the day) and she resumed work the next day with minimal discomfort. Following EVLA, Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy (UGS) and Direct Vision Sclerotherapy (DVS) were performed. She tolerated UGS and DVS very well with minimum discomfort and no downtime.
The photo was taken after 15 weeks post 2 sessions of the treatment cycle. She was extremely satisfied with both aesthetic and medical outcomes as her symptoms disappeared and her confidence improved a lot, she was comfortable wearing shorts and skirts after 20 years and resumed exercise.
